What the gas V8 offers
The gas engine is the standard powertrain and a useful starting point for a truck that divides its time between carrying equipment, everyday travel and towing. Select it with the appropriate trailering configuration rather than treating engine output as a substitute for the vehicle's ratings.
What the Duramax changes
The available Duramax adds substantial torque and a diesel ownership routine. It also appears in the higher-rated Max Trailering configurations. Evaluate it with your loaded trailer information, your passenger needs and the equipment that stays in the bed; the most powerful engine is only one part of the full setup.
Exterior dimensions: know your body style
| Cab | Bed choices | Planning emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Cab | Long bed | Single seating row and equipment-carrying space |
| Double Cab | Standard or long bed | Rear-seat use balanced with the chosen bed |
| Crew Cab | Standard or long bed | Regular rear-passenger access and seating |
For a concrete sizing reference, the following figures describe the LT Crew Cab, standard bed, 4WD with the gas V8. They are not a dimensional claim for a ZR2 or a long-bed truck. Measurements are rounded as shown.
| Measurement | LT Crew Cab standard bed 4WD gas |
|---|---|
| Overall length | 250.0 inches |
| Wheelbase | 159 inches |
| Body width, excluding mirrors | 81.9 inches |
| Overall height | 79.8 inches |
| Ground clearance | 10.1 inches |
| Bed-floor length | 82.3 inches |
| Fuel tank | 36 gallons |
| Curb weight, specified configuration | 6,686 pounds |
Allow room beyond the body measurements for mirrors, accessories and movement. A driveway entrance may fit the truck once it is straight but require more room during the turn. Measure the usable opening at its narrowest point, including door tracks, shelving or a workbench. For a garage, also consider where the tailgate will open and whether you need to walk around the truck.
Width without mirrors is a body measurement. It does not tell you the operating envelope with trailering mirrors extended. Likewise, a ground-clearance measurement does not mean every component will pass over an obstacle of that height. Assess the actual truck and the path it will take.
Interior dimensions for Reading-area passengers
| Front-row measurement | Regular Cab | Double Cab | Crew Cab |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headroom | 43.11 inches | 43.03 inches | 43.03 inches |
| Legroom | 44.53 inches | 44.53 inches | 44.53 inches |
| Shoulder room | 66.06 inches | 66.02 inches | 66.02 inches |
Front dimensions are close across cab styles, so the rear-seat requirement often does more to determine the best cab. Regular Cab has one row. With either rear-seat cab, evaluate the space after setting the front seats for their regular occupants.
| Rear-row measurement | LT Crew Cab standard bed 4WD gas |
|---|---|
| Headroom | 40.1 inches |
| Legroom | 43.4 inches |
| Shoulder room | 65.3 inches |
A measurement can narrow the choice, but your seating arrangement completes it. Check knee space, foot placement, seat-belt access and how the passenger gets in. If you use a child restraint, bring it for a stationary fit check following the restraint instructions and vehicle manual. Keep work gear secured so it does not consume the space passengers need.
Plan enclosed storage and bed storage separately
Paperwork, bags and small equipment may need weather-protected storage; large or dirty items often belong in the bed. Decide what must travel inside before judging the cab. A roomy seat does not solve the problem of loose tools, and a long bed does not create a secure cabin compartment.

Capacity and capability: bed space and weight ratings
Durabed uses high-strength roll-formed steel and includes 12 tie-downs. The long bed offers 83.5 cubic feet of cargo volume. Treat volume and weight as separate limits: an item may fit physically while its weight, passengers and other cargo use the truck's available payload.
| Term | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Curb weight | The truck's weight with standard equipment and operating fluids | Keep engine and configuration attached to the figure |
| Payload | Allowance for occupants and cargo, including hitch load and added equipment | Use the selected truck's tire-and-loading label |
| GVWR | Maximum permitted loaded truck weight | Check the certification label and loaded scale weight |
| GCWR | Maximum permitted loaded truck-and-trailer combination | Match the trailering chart to the truck |
| Rear axle rating | Permitted load on the rear axle | Check it independently of total truck weight |
These sample chart rows show why configuration matters. All figures require the listed equipment and proper loading; they are not universal trim ratings.
| 2026 Crew Cab standard bed 4x4 configuration | GVWR | GCWR | Conventional towing | Fifth-wheel/gooseneck |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gas; 18-inch, 20-inch or 22-inch wheels | 10,850 pounds | 26,000 pounds | 16,000 lbs | 18,380 lbs |
| Duramax; 18-inch, 20-inch or 22-inch wheels | 11,350 pounds | 27,500 pounds | 18,500 lbs | 19,200 lbs |
| Duramax; 18-inch or 20-inch wheels; Max Trailering Package | 11,750 pounds | 30,000 pounds | 20,000 lbs | 21,600 lbs |
Passengers, cargo and accessories affect the usable allowance. Read the full towing and payload explanation before matching a trailer. The sample dimensional LT above and these rating rows are separate examples; do not combine their measurements into an assumed build.
Wheels, tires and brakes
Custom includes 20-inch machined-aluminum wheels, while High Country has 20-inch polished-aluminum wheels. LT offers 20-inch wheels as an option. ZR2 pairs its off-pavement suspension with 35-inch Goodyear MT tires. A wheel's diameter alone does not establish the tire's load capacity or the truck's towing allowance.
Keep the complete tire specification and the vehicle placard in the conversation when choosing replacement tires. Confirm the appropriate cold pressure and load rating for the truck. For trailer use, the trailer's tires and braking system need their own inspection and setup; the truck's brake system does not replace them.
Efficiency and range
Fuel use changes with speed, trailer profile, load, weather and idling. For ownership planning, use your actual route and work pattern rather than multiplying a generic economy estimate by tank size. The 36-gallon tank in the LT Crew Cab standard-bed gas example identifies capacity, not a promised driving distance.
Keep a simple fuel log after purchase: miles driven, fuel added and whether the trip involved towing. Separate loaded trips from ordinary travel when planning stops. Drivers heading out on US Route 422 or US Route 222 can make range planning part of the trip instead of treating the low-fuel warning as the next stop signal.

What these numbers mean in practice
| Your task | Measure or bring | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Park in a garage or work bay | Opening, depth, approach and the actual truck with accessories | Cab and bed fit with usable clearance |
| Carry passengers and equipment | Usual seating arrangement and cargo list | Cab comfort plus enough payload allowance |
| Load a long item | Its length, width and securement needs | Bed choice and tie-down plan |
| Tow a travel or equipment trailer | Loaded trailer weight and tongue/pin load | Correct hitch type and rating row |
A buyer from Lebanon may be measuring a shop bay; a buyer from Bally may need a cab that works for a family and a work crew. Bring the measurements that belong to your use. We can help connect them to the Silverado 2500HD you want to drive.
Specifications FAQs
Does the 81.9-inch width include the mirrors?
No. The 81.9-inch figure shown for the LT Crew Cab standard-bed 4WD gas example is body width without mirrors. Measure the actual mirror envelope for a narrow opening.
Can I use the standard-bed dimensions for a long-bed truck?
No. The bed and overall body dimensions change with the configuration. Identify the cab and bed on the vehicle before measuring your parking space.
What is the difference between GVWR and GCWR?
GVWR limits the loaded truck itself. GCWR limits the loaded truck and trailer together. Both apply alongside axle, tire, hitch and trailer-weight limits.
Does cargo volume tell me how much weight the bed can carry?
No. Volume describes space. The truck's payload allowance and axle limits govern weight, including passengers, accessories and trailer tongue or pin load.
Why should rear-seat measurements be checked with the driver seated?
The driver's normal seat position affects the space behind it. Setting that position first makes the rear-seat evaluation relevant to the way your truck will be used.
Is fuel capacity the same as driving range?
No. Tank size is a volume measurement. Driving distance depends on consumption, which changes with load, towing, speed and operating conditions.
Can I add a toolbox without changing my load calculations?
The toolbox and its contents use payload and may reduce usable bed space. Include both in your loading plan and check the actual truck's labels.
